History of Honnavar

Honnavar has a long history that goes back to when it was an important port on the Malabar Coast. It is recognized for its strategic location and established role in trade and business, linking India to the Middle East, Africa, and beyond. The natural harbor rendered it a favored waypoint for merchants and sailors engaged in the trading of spices, silks, and other goods.

In the Middle Ages, Honnavar was ruled by a number of different families, starting with the Kadambas and continuing with the Cholas, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Portuguese, and finally the British. An extremely long line of masters has left this place with a huge amount of historical and architectural treasures, such as old forts, temples, and remnants of colonial architecture.

Ruins of old forts and churches stand as testimony to the Portuguese influence in this area. An important one among these ruins is the Basavaraj Durga Fort perched amidst an island just off the coastline of Honnavar, people can only visit this place once in a year and you can reach the place only with the help of local fishermen. This fort has been named after Keladi King Shivappa Nayaka and gives an insight into the history of the place and its maritime importance. This island has a Hindu temple on its top surface constructed by the ruler between the 16th and 17th centuries. Now people, especially fishermen and boat owners, visit this temple with their families on Makarasankranti day (a Hindu festival) on 14 January to give pooja to Nagadevate (a Hindu god) to protect and guide them from natures forces while working on the sea.

Today, Honnavar is a testator to this variegated history, mixing its cultural past with the natural beauty of the coast. The town’s historical significance and strategic importance seem to have left an indelible mark on people’s minds, and Honnavar is not just a scenic retreat but a single place that narrates tales from its glorious historic past.
